I want to introduce you to one of the most authoritative sources on the vulnerability of our critical infrastructure, Blackout Wars. In the interest of full disclosure, I also need to offer a little of my background with the author. I met Dr. Peter Vincent Pry a few years ago when I asked him to factcheck an article I published on the vulnerability of the grid. After which, Dr. Pry also vetted the description I wrote of America's vulnerability to attack in my thriller Patriarch Run. I was extremely fortunate that a person of Dr. Pry's stature took the time to read my work. He was even kind enough to endorse the realism of my novel's description of the threat to the grid. Thus, began our relationship. As I became increasingly alarmed by the gravity of the threat I had researched for my thriller, I got more and more involved in solving the problem. As a matter of fact, I now work under Dr. Pry at the Colorado EMP Task Force on National and Homeland Security.
Having disclosed that relationship, I'd like to encourage you to read one of the most authoritative sources on the subject of our nation's security. Dr. Pry's book Blackout Wars is about a threat to our civilization of unprecedented magnitude. Over the last century, our population has grown so large that we simply cannot sustain it without a reliable source of electricity. If the grid were to be attacked or to go down from natural causes (such as a coronal mass ejection), the entire population of the United States would be at risk. There would be no food. No clean water. No sanitation. No communications. No transportation. No finance. In short, the critical infrastructures that sustains us would be lost.
There are several realistic mechanisms of destruction that could lead to this catastrophe, including an EMP attack, a cyberattack, mechanical sabotage and a coronal mass ejection. Blackout Wars warns that terrorists and rogue states know how to exploit this incredible weakness.
If you want to be up to date on the most underreported threat civilization has ever faced, read Dr. Pry's book! You can also watch the film National Geographic made about another book of Dr. Pry's at my Discussion Guide.
